Tools Used by Sedation Dentists
Sedation dentists are dentists that are certified and able to offer a sedative to those patients that are anxious about their upcoming dental procedure. These procedures are normally done in an office setting and the sedatives are given right there in the dentists’ office. Once a patient asks to be sedated, sedation dentists will describe the different options that are available. The combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen is often referred to as laughing gas. This is a gas that is often breathed in and has almost immediate effects in patients. Although the results of laughing gas are seen very quickly, sedation dentists sometimes prefer the more pronounced effects of oral sedatives. These sedatives can be taken by the patient hours or even the day before the actual procedure is to take place. Once the medication takes effect in the patient, the anxiety they feel normally melts away and stays away for some time after the procedure is over. For those that need more medication to keep them comfortable through a long dental procedure, sedatives can be given through an IV. Not all patients are eligible for this method of sedation but it is available for those that absolutely need it. For a little anxiety or a ton, sedation dentists can adjust their tools to get the job done successfully.
